How to take great care of your jewellery.
What we love we look after. Taking care of precious metals, diamonds and gemstones is not that difficult. With a little TLC, you can go a long way to keeping your jewellery in excellent, sparkling condition and good health.
Below you will find a simple guidelines to the cleaning and care for all the different materials Valerio Jewellery currently uses in its collections. Quick tip, common to cleaning all jewellery is warm water and a mild soap solution. Always use a chemical free soap—no-one likes chemicals.
Diamond is the hardest mineral we know of, but they are not indestructible. They can be scratched, chipped or split by sharp edges. No one wants that, so take care when wearing and storing your diamond jewellery. We always recommend you keep your diamond jewellery in its box or case. Also always be aware of diamonds scratching diamonds, so lay your diamonds out flat wherever possible.
Clean your diamonds with warm soapy eco-friendly liquid and a soft toothbrush, rinsing the stone and setting thoroughly to ensure no soap is left on the jewellery and then air dry.
Gemstones really don’t like the following; hand cream, finger-prints, perspiration, chemicals and over exposure to general dirt. The good news they can easily be cleaned, with mild chemical free soap solutions.
Special attention should be given when cleaning emerald jewellery. Emeralds are often oiled in order to disguise the very frequent appearance of flaws. Therefore, emeralds should never be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaning device; as this will remove the oil and spoil the lustre and appearance.
Some gemstones are light sensitive and exposure to the sunlight may cause them to become paler. So it is recommended to keep gemstone set jewellery out of direct sunlight when you are not wearing it.
Some gemstones such as opal, pearl and turquoise are porous and should avoid contact with water for prolonged periods of time.
The lustre and patina of gold is gorgeous. It does not tarnish or fade over time. In its pure form however it is very soft and care should always be taken not to scratch or bash it.
We recommend that you wear rings of a similar carat together, e.g. your wedding and engagement ring, as the higher the caratage of gold you wear, the softer the metal and one may wear down the other over time.
Gold should be cleaned regularly in order to maintain its beauty. A soft, lint free cloth is a very effective way to keep gold jewellery looking beautiful.
Gold does not like chlorine or bleach so be aware of this when in a swimming pool or hot tub.
As with diamonds and gemstones, you should take care to protect your jewellery by keeping it safe in the jewellery box it came with.
Silver tarnishes, but if cleaned regularly it will retain its reflective beauty.
Once again, warm soapy water is best, rinsed thoroughly and air-dried before storing. Alternatively polish your silver jewellery with a soft cloth, can also have the desired effect.
As with gold, silver does not like chlorine or bleach so avoid wearing silver jewellery when near these products.
